Surgery has a central role in the treatment of colorectal cancer and it has evolved over the last century for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and oncologic best results. The adoption of the total mesorectal excision technique (TME), described in 1982 by Professor Bill Heald, was a big step towards the best oncological results.

The development of MIS approach to TME came optimized postoperative results. Laparoscopic TME, besides present with the same oncological results, is associated with better postoperative recovery, less morbidity and a shorter hospital stay.

Transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) is presented as a promising new surgical technique for the approach to the distal rectum, providing the ability to perform a high quality resection, with technical advantages over the laparoscopic approach. With this new technique, direct access, under direct vision, of the distal rectum is simplified, facilitating the mobilization of the distal rectum.

Similar to other novel procedures, to familiarize the surgeon with this new technique and reduce the learning curve, in a safe manner, it is required detailed technical reports and detailed stepwise description. In this course you will learn surgical indications, technical steps and how to get better results.
