From Researcher to Entrepreneur
An introduction of the factors to be considered when transitioning from scientific research to the mindset of a potential entrepreneur. This component will end with participants having a clear picture of what it takes to become an entrepreneur.
Format: Interactive Power Point presentation.

Founder’s Vision
Basic science discoveries tend to have widespread applications, and scientists usually have difficulty focusing on one particular aspect or application. However, research and development focus is crucial for a successful startup as it directly affects the potential commercialization of the application and its timing to market. This component will help each participant to zoom into what they want and really need to do - the Founder’s Vision: this will be the first deliverable from the Practicum.
Format: Guided small group discussion ending with a whole group discussion.

Startup Mission
After defining the Founder’s vision, each participant will work on a mission statement for his/her startup. We will help participants to define a mission which is consistent with the vision, and will serve as a blueprint for future decisions and investments, the basis for a Strategic Plan. The Mission Statement will be the second deliverable from the Practicum.
Format: Guided small group discussion ending with a whole group discussion.

R&D Funding
Participants will get acquainted with the different sources of funding, from undiluted to private equity, including Venture Capital, Angel Investors, and Crowdsourcing. The pros and cons of each type of funding will be discussed and participants will define the most appropriate source(s) for their stage of development. Participants will have specific information on sources, their third Practicum deliverable.
Format: Interactive Power Point presentation mixed with small group discussion.

Exit Strategies
The main exit strategies in biomedical and biotechnological innovation, their characteristics and uses. Participants will be invited to discuss and explore the different exits in the context of their innovation. Each participant will have a draft of the prioritize choices, the fourth Practicum deliverable.
Format: Interactive Power Point presentation mixed with small group discussion.

A Successful Pitch
The focus, structure, and timing of a successful pitch will be shared along with tips for dos and don’ts. A print out of the ideal structure will be shared; this will be the fifth deliverable.
Format: Power Point presentation with Q&A.

Pitching Practice
Each and every participant will prepare and practice giving 15 minutes pitches each one, while others play the role of different types of “investors.” There will be Q&A between “investors” and “applicants” with instructor serving as moderator. The written individual pitches will be the sixth deliverable of the Practicum.
Format: Simulation of actual pitches with feedback.

Structure of a Business Plan
​Participants will learn the main components of a great business plan, their organization, necessary level of detail, and format. They will also learn the types of help that may be needed, and when. This will be the seventh deliverable (printed copy).
Format: Power Point presentation with Q&A.

Critique of Individual Business Plans
Each and every participant will prepare and practice presenting his/hers business plan to “investors” played by other participants. There will be Q&A between “investors” and “applicants” with instructor serving as moderator. The written individual business plan will be the eighth deliverable of the Practicum.

Closing & Evaluation
Final questions and answers. Participants will be asked to fill an evaluation form.
